Did you know that SimpleIndex can read handwriting? Now you do!
SimpleIndex 11.4 gives you the option to read all kinds of handwriting. This can be done with both the FineReader and the AWS Textract OCR engines. FineReader works best with forms that have letter boxes or combs to ensure that they are filled out with printed letters. AWS Textract is able to read unconstrained handwriting, even in cursive.

FineReader can also read unconstrained print, but Textract provides much better accuracy. Of course, Textract requires an AWS account and per-image processing fees will apply.
Configure FineReader handprint fields the same way you would a standard Zone OCR field. It becomes a handprint field when you change the Type from Simple Text to one of the other values. Most of the common form field types are supported. For types that use individual letter boxes, enter the total number in the Characters setting. The Data Type helps fine-tune the recognition to look for only valid letters or numbers.

For AWS Textract, simply enable the Full-Page OCR option with one of the Textract engines selected, or configure OCR zones using the AWS Text engine. Textract will read all of the handwriting on the page or in each zone automatically. No additional configuration is necessary.
Oh yeah, did you realize you can do Zone OCR with Textract now? This can significantly improve performance when you only need a small part of the page to be read, or when you can’t identify the value with patter matching.
