The PDF/A format is an open standards version of the Adobe PDF. As businesses started to use widely use the PDF format for document archival, there were concerns that the proprietary PDF format may someday become obsolete and unsupported, as had happened with many earlier file formats.

PDF/A was created to solve this problem by providing all of the features and convenience of a PDF using a fully open standard to avoid future compatibility issues.
